Spaces In Between

An art installation that explores the nature of rhythms, including its textures, cycles, and transitions.

Through the use of bioplastic, upcycled acrylic, laser projection, and movement, it transforms projected patterns into a sensory experience, inviting reflection on the delicate space between presence and absence. It draws you into the quiet corners of memory, urging a moment of reflection. It calls for a pause, a moment to reconnect with the unseen, the overlooked, and the whispers of life that often fade into the background.

Artwork by SalahEddin AlQawasmi and Hanan Al-Jabary, in collaboration with Layth Mejbel.

Project Creation

The installation was shaped through an exploration of material behavior and mechanical motion. Bioplastic made from gelatin and glycerin was cast into textured, custom molds. After several rounds of experimentation, the formula was refined to achieve a balance between flexibility and strength, revealing how the material responded not only to proportion but also to environmental factors like temperature. This living surface was then paired with upcycled acrylic sheets, creating a tension between softness and rigidity.

A custom crankshaft mechanism set the entire piece in motion, inspired by the fleeting ripple of a waterdrop. As it turned, laser projections filtered through the bioplastic’s textured surface to generate a lumia effect: rhythmic patterns projected on a nearby wall. This interplay of movement and light transformed the sculpture into a space of sensory reflection.
